(Craps continued)Free Odds in CrapsTo determine combined line and behind line odds, enter the amounts you wish to bet on the line and and behind the line (odds) and click "calc". If you want to know the combined house edge for double odds, for example, just make sure the amount behind the line is twice as much as the amount on the line. These calculations hold true for come and don't come bets also. Combined Line/Behind-The-Line Odds Pass Line $ |

| x Odds There are a couple of wagers in craps that are known as free odds bets. Free odds means that the house has no statistical edge on the bet. When a pass line or don't pass wager is made and after the point has been established, the bettor has the option of placing an additional wager behind the line. All wagers made behind the pass line will pay according to the actual odds of the particular point coming before seven: 4 or 10 pays 2:1, 5 or 9 pays 3:2, 6 or 8 pays 6:5. Don't pass wagers also have a behind the line option that pays true odds. However, don't pass bettors must lay odds. This means that on a 4 or 10, wrong bettors must lay 2 to get 1, on a 5 or 9 bet 3 to get 2, and on a 6 or 8 bet 6 to get 5. The reason that don't pass bettors must lay odds is that once in point play, which I have referred to earlier as stage 2, they are betting with the 7 which has a better chance of coming than any other number. Having to lay odds, although perfectly fair, turns most gamblers off and therefore the don't pass bar gets little action. Similar to pass and don't pass, Come and Don't Come wagers have free odds options. If you are not familiar with the come and don't come bet, they work the same as pass and don't pass. The only difference is that you do not have to wait until the come out roll to make the wager. To make a come bet, place your wager on the come bar in the center of the table. As with the pass line, if a 7 or 11 is rolled you win and if craps is rolled you lose. Once the come point is rolled, you can place odds by laying your odds wagers in the center of the table and saying something like, "Odds on the 6". (Or 8 or whatever the come point is.) Your original wager will be taken and placed on the come point that was rolled. Your odds bet will be placed on top of your original bet, but in such a way that you can tell the difference between your original wager and your odds wager. The free odds wagers for the come bet pays the same as the free odds wager on the pass line. Likewise, free odds bets on don't come pay the same as don't pass. One thing to note is that the odds on come points are off during a come out roll (stage 1); Since the house does not have an edge on free odds bets, they normally place a limit on the amount you can wager behind the line. Traditionally, casinos only offered either single or double odds behind the line. That is, if you bet $5 on the line, single odds would allow $5 behind the line and double odds would allow $10. Today, most craps games now offer anywhere from 5 x odds to 20 x odds behind the line. You may even be able to find a game where there is no limit behind the line. Keep in mind that, no matter how much you put behind the line, the house will still have at least a slight edge on the combined line and odds wager. |
