What's going on in Alabama right now over the bingo based casinos and the Governor's determination to shut them all down is hilarious.

A few years ago we went through something similar with the so called 'Chucky Cheese exemption' when small arcade sized 'casinos' (if you can call them that) opened up all over the state. They were all eventually zapped in court.

The last few years we have had several interesting rulings involving these 'quasi' bingo based casino operations which run slots with the legal basis that the internal 'math' is essentially Bingo. Bingo being an exemption in gambling laws for charitable purposes. And several of these casinos (some very large) are operating in Alabama at the moment.

More on the Alabama bingo mess.

Quote:
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson of Montgomery ruled Monday that he was refusing to block a raid on the Country Crossing bingo hall near Dothan.

The Alabama Supreme Court has yet to hear the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling's plea to set aside the temporary restraining order preventing it from raiding VictoryLand in Macon County.

VictoryLand and its adjacent 300-room hotel, The Oasis, along with many of the bingo operations across the state, have closed as the legal battle over bingo continues to brew and lawyers look for ways to get the casinos back open without risk of a raid by Gov. Bob Riley's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.

The bingo mess in Alabama just got a little more interesting. According to the Associated Press, former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, who was indicted on bribery charges and removed from office in 2009, won 1.5 million dollars worth of jackpots at the Victory Land casino in Macon County. Victory Land is a joint dog track and bingo based casino owned by Milton McGregor, who also owns the Birmingham Race Course.

Milton McGregor is one of the main proponents of gambling in Alabama and, oh by the way, a big political backer of Larry Langford.

Governor Bob Riley has been trying to shut down the bingo based casinos and his task force has attempted to raid Victory Land without a warrant. I seem to recall a few week s back when McGregor shut down Victory Land to avoid a raid. It was said at the time that they were updating the software of the slots to make sure they were in compliance with the law. Considering Langford’s series of jackpots, I now wonder exactly what would have been found in examining the machines before McGregor had them changed.

Alabama should either:

1. Close all the loopholes (good luck with that) or

2. Make casino style gambling legal and well regulated by a gaming commission

But until then, I guess we can all enjoy this absurd spectacle.
